2010 Rewind

"I’ve always had this desire to destroy things that already existed. Nothing pre-existing ever managed to touch me…and it’s the same when I’m creating songs. I like to destroy the relationship between arrangement and improvisation. Anything I can break, I will." – Keiji Haino

That Good Show Buzz

There are a few noteworthy shows coming up soon:

Lazy Magnet is purportedly playing at All Day records tomorrow evening (Sunday, December 13th)...however, I now see that this has been removed from the Hot-Releases events page. However, the Lazy Magnet blog still says he's coming...if he makes it, it's worth checking out. You never know what to expect with this a*hole. Put your ears to the ground, do some sleuthing, and find out if this is happening...you'll thank yourself later.

Also, No Age and Rene Hell are coming to the Grey Eagle in Asheville on Saturday, January 22nd. I'm thinking about making the drive for this one. Rene Hell has been on my stereo quite a bit this year, so I'm stoked to have a chance to finally check him out live. Get in touch if you're interested in carpooling with me.

Also, it's almost time for year end lists to start rolling in. If you're so inclined, feel free to post your favorite releases of 2010.

Adios A*Holes!

Esplendor Geométrico - Moscú Está Helado

The latest All Day Record refuge at Berthall is a curated set of minimal 80s electro tracks from Veronica Vasicka and Peanut Butter Wolf. What don't they listen to at Stones Throw? My hazy impression is that this double disc set was some kind of debutant dance for the Minimal Wave record label (Discogs has it double indexed as STH2223 and MWC01), although it seems they've been releasing tracks since 2005. Maybe Stones Throw is lending some some distribution heft their way and making a renewed marketing push. Ethan says they'll be carrying more Minimal Wave stuff soon at All Day.

It's kind of like when Yuengling came to Orange County. Remember that? about 8 years ago?

Love this track from Esplendor Geométrico.

The brief bio for the band says they were from Madrid and had another band El Aviador Dro. This song is from 1980.

OK, one more, just cause last night's Secret Boyfriend set was one of the most dynamic things I've ever seen one person do. And this iPhone recording actually turned out kind of OK.

whiskering deers at dusk

All Day Records is going to be the death of me. Having an awesome record store in your tiny town is not easy on the pocket book. Among the records from yesterday's take: new Hot Releases split EP from Horaflora and Secret Boyfriend. As I was listening to it, the neighborhood deers appeared to eat from our "wilderness area." Yes, our landlord actually called it that. Pick it up from your local record store today! And go get more new Hot Releases at the show tonight!

Zero Cliff

There are ideas made of clay, and there are ideas sculpted for the ages out of gold or out of our precious glass. And to determine what material an idea is made of, all you have to do is let a drop of powerful acid fall on it. Even the ancients knew one such acid: reductio ad finem. That's what they seem to have called it. But they were afraid of this poison. They preferred to see at least some kind of heaven--however clay, however toylike--to this blue nothing. But we are grown-ups, thanks be to the Benefactor, and don't need toys...that explains the way things are divided up: To the ton go the rights, to the gram the duties. And the natural path from nullity to greatness is this: Forget that you're a gram and feel yourself a millionth part of a ton.

Concerto Generator

To commemorate the new release by Outer Space on Arbor Infinity, I would like to share this fine piece of work by Laurie Spiegel. Not only is it awesome and very akin to what you might hear from the likes of John Elliot (an obvious influence), but she is unique because she is one of very few female artists that blazed the trail in electronic music. If you want to hear more from her, check out this Continuo blog post.

Art Lord and the Self Portraits ca. 2004

Ashley WeinbergerThis poster reminded me of that thing that Sean Connery fights in Time Bandits. The poster is for a show tonight at Nighlight featuring, among others, Greensboro's Mutant League, described by NL's emailbot as having "a lo-fi approach reminiscent of Haunted House or those early Art Lord tapes."Art Lord and the Self Portraits being, of course, the precursor to the 22nd-century-era-Frank-Sinatraesque Future Islands. I was reminded of an old Art Lord tape that I had. This was recorded October 24 in Carrboro, NC (opening for El Vez!?). These guys had a ridiculous show schedule during this time period... not quite a year before they toured with Dan Deacon and, legend has it, got their big break. And while we're getting round about, I think I've got a Haunted House live show somewhere, too. See if I can scrounge that up... Incidentally, genius riff on techno-atheism courtesy beeelzabub below.

Scandalous ghosts!

Down at the creepshow baby!!!

Way Down South

Harry Pussy's Bill Orcutt released a great album of 4-string guitar formulations in September 2009. That album was on fire. He single-handedly killed any notions of limitations with an acoustic guitar. The sound that resulted from this album is definitely abrasive but also bluesy at times. It's a truly unique outing. "Even at its wild & wooliest, there’s always a harmonic logic at the core of Bill’s playing; definitely not a straight “noise guitar” outing but rather something approaching the true coltrane “sheets of sound” ethos ..." says KFW on his Mimaroglu write-up. So, if that sounds like your thing, check out this video which features footage from Bill's latest tour. This show was at Brickbat Books in Philly. There's a highlight for me around 6:20...it gets a little tender.

Bill Orcutt - live @ Brickbat Books 07-22-2010 from Breathmint on Vimeo.

I post this in the hopes that Bill will consider coming through NC when he resumes his tour schedule. I've been in touch and I am trying to arrange something. If it doesn't work out, at least he came through our world via Wrinkleboro, right? I'll keep you posted on the status of this effort. In the meantime, visit Bill's Palilalia record label. There's a new one-sided 12" that looks pretty gnarly.

C.I.A.>>>>>World Full of Lumpens

Outrageously stunning video stylings courtesy of Yayoi Kusama:

I've never seen anyone that could make polka dots haunting and evil. Somehow this woman makes it her life's work. Soundz by Citizens for Interplanetary Activity!!!

Weak in the Splitz...the future? Worthless!

I just got inspired...excellent weirdo side from R. Stevie Moore! Love those expressions...and that baritone wash.

Also, in local news, there's a pretty sweet local lady who goes by VVAQRT that has an excellent one-sided cassette out now...it's pretty special. She's straight out of Saxapahaw and she comes bearing guns. Check out some sounds clipz here. Also, gander at some of the lyrics to her songs. Pretty wicked original left field fastball. Click on the pics for the wind-up and the pitch; peace bitch!
