Paradise Engineering

YACHT "Shangri-La" DFA2264
In case I never made it explicit, I am totally into paradise. Utopia. Shangri-La. I've been trying to figure it out since I thought I could talk my life-long public school friends into starting a commune. My ideas about how to collaborate have changed since then.  Now I know there should be lots more dancing than I had originally thought.

That's why this unexpected find today by YACHT at CD Alley has been a gas. I just finished a project that involved generously licensed instrumental versions of their last album's songs, available on the venerable Free Music Archive. And now, here they are again, talking about how gods are up for grabs.

But check the paper on this album?! A gatefold to behold, if not a consistent album (easily forgivable since this works more like a concept double 12." Spins at 45rpm even.) As for the pressing itself, there is unfortunately audible distortion in the sibilance-y frequencies and timbres. Still, my cubicle will be the best cubicle, with these YACHT book cover things tacked up all over the place. And if it does take six million years to build Shangri-La, I'll be happy to have these bass lines with me.

See you there.

RIP CON

Via Brian Turner on WFMU's Beware of the Blog:

Sad news of Conrad Schnitzler's passing from stomach cancer, August 4th. A true maverick of experimental and electronic sound, Schnitzler's work with the likes of Kluster, Tangerine Dream, Gen Ken Montgomery and many others added a rather dramatic fork in the road in the avenues of progressive music starting as far back as the late 1960's. Melodies, rhythms, noise, field sounds, all cloaked with alien atmosphere with a unique vocabulary that was highly emulated, but never replicated. Conrad und Sohn is a particular fave of mine, a 1981 recording he did with his teenage son Gregor that presents a totally Venusian wall of electronics and off-the-wall vox in English, but each of his nearly-100 releases all give glimpses into a truly visionary mind and world. This video clip is not in English, but presents some great images; Schnitzler finished his latest music project a few days before his death, and sent strands of his hair around the world in preparation for his departure, also starting the Global Living site. RIP.

hint for the shrinkage

mug, go to your waffle?
fish, a possible parallel reality, yes
mug, to what extent the salt in the pie?
fish, except for three
mug, except four, then?
fish, a joke on your grave
mug, I do not Spielerei, I am the real thing
fish, especially fish and
mug, especially if the war god was eating potatoes
fish, certainly if a stable relationship to better access the modem port implies
mug, keep up with me all the time to calibrate
fish, then you must measure out proportions, but more
mug, measure to ensure your blackheads
fish; suffering pales with some ass
mug, as the worth he leaves his cabinet
hint, I'm just not what I am
shrinkage, you're more Nug
hint, I'm more, I provoke
shrinkage, provokes you?
hint, for example
shrinkage, but who me?
hint, yes you, you, you, you can ,....
shrinkage, but I do not
hint, that does not much?
shrinkage, that I will not take as much as possible
hint, but never as much as I am more and provoke
shrinkage, with age, you never get
hint, just
shrinkage, you're a pushover
hint, you think you can do something but you do not touch me. I'm high
shrinkage, how high
hint, higher, always a little higher
shrinkage, do you never think about falling?
hint, my thinking is always taking off
shrinkage, my valley is always thought

Kind of Entranc'd

WTF? I just talked to Robbie here last night at the 333Legged Race show and he explains this mechanism for controlling his synth with his own brainwaves via the Mattel Mindflex. This is brilliant! I wish I could have seen him demonstrate this at Duke the day prior. However, I'm superbly impressed with the idea of it all. So, here's a simple demonstration via U-TOOB.

This one's much better...it features Robert Beatty and I think that makes a difference.

Yo, yo, yo! Is this some trippy shizzy or what? Modified toyz bring mucho, beaucoup joyz.

Biological Speculation

I've been on the Parliament-Funkadelic mothership for a little while now, but the chariot has been swinging especially low since the Carrboro record show last weekend. I can't seem to get them out of my head. Could be related to the impending triple whammy of graduation/marriage/new job, a future which seems so strange and otherworldly as to cause psychedelic things in my head. And that always goes best with serious ass-shaking.

Biological Speculation from Mike Control on Vimeo.

Also at play is the coming of spring, as exemplified by this fine knockout Piedmont Thursday. Being a southern boy raised on album-oriented rock stations, I associate searing steel guitar with sunny days, so this track from Funkadelic's 1972 album America Eats Its Young is doing me right. I love the song title. What is he speculating about?

I'm fascinated by musicians that are workaholics, especially when they're as far out as the funk mob. Can you believe George Clinton made 20 albums in the 70s alone?

Stuck

It's been a while...so to make up for lost time, I am providing you with an extended half hour piece from Liz Harris, aka Grouper. This video is chock full of effects and is a little on the creepy side. The music is really great...not your soft whispery Grouper, this is more in line with the earlier Grouper records. Enjoy!

2010 Double Scrubble: Have Yourself a Merry Scrubble Day Mixtape

Bringing up the rear is in fact a perfectly likely thing for DJ Scrubbin Bubbles to be doing, except that it is usually accompanied by a subsequent putting down of the rear, or just as likely, some kind of side to side movement.

In any case, these were some of the tracks that moved my body the most in 2010, all of them discovered (or bought on vinyl) for the first time this year, though some be as old as the hills, young whipper bug.

The common thread here is "beat oriented," but I tried to cover some tempo, genre, and nation-state ground. Looking at the mix in retro-vision, three clear influences emerge: Fool's Gold, Mad Decent (run by fellow Mississippi native son Diplo), and the long-awaiting opening of All Day Records in beautiful downtown Carrboro, which caused me to spend a whole lot of money in a fairly ecstatic kind of way. And let me tell you, this does not necessarily result in good record purchases, but which nevertheless was a hell of a lot of fun. The two strange vocoder work-outs at the end were finds from All Day. Sorry, I can't resist mixing them together all the time. Thanks Ethan and Charlie!

One final 2010 side-scrubble: was very happy to see the debut of the new record label Paradise of Bachelors, co-run by my former WXYC boss and local soul authority Jason Perlmutter. Said I Had a Vision was a fantastic first effort from them.
